1981. I've got a bunch of pics of Dennis Kemp but none of them quite capture the 'fatherly' side of him as this one does. Dennis, as the oldest member of our 1980's Arapiles 'family', would take a dim view of us doing stupid things (such as throwing gas canisters in the fire or chucking possums into other people's tents). This is the half-serious face he used when admonishing us. In 1990 Dennis told me that he was moving up to Arapiles for good and that he intended to spend what time he had climbing. I asked if he had been successful with his permanent residency application (he lived in Wales) and he said no. I'm an old man', he declared, 'who on earth would be interested in searching me out?'. Dennis died not long afterwords in an accident on Birdman of Alcatraz and was buried in Natimuk Cemetary. He was 67 years old.
